During the bloody police riots of the early twentieth century, a Boston police officer from a wealthy family, Danny Coughlin, joins a union movement to track down violent radicals, but his values are challenged when he learns that Luther Laurence, the African-American houseman who works for the Coughlin family, is connected with the NAACP.
